Many of us are getting better at saying “no” to requests that aren’t aligned with our goals and needs. While walking in the woods last Sunday, I had an ah-ha moment. I was struck by the realization that when I say “no” with confidence and clarity to things that are not a fit, I’m allowing them to exit gracefully while simultaneously allowing me to see all the opportunities that were waiting outside the door.
Do you have opportunities being blocked by your hesitation to let the wrong options go?
Okay, let’s say “yes” to the right things this week! Below are shares to spark new thoughts:

- Trauma-Informed Leadership in a World in Flux—is a program designed to help leaders work through complexity by honoring the connection between their nervous systems, the ecosystems they lead within, and the larger social, political, and organizational systems they’re navigating. If interested, sign up here. It started November 5th, but the first session was recorded so it’s easy to catch up.
- What is the one trait that makes for a great manager? They invest in helping their direct reports succeed by supporting them in finding roles where they can perform at their best. Here’s a gift link to the full story in The Wall Street Journal.
- If I’ve shared this before, it bears repeating. No one has THE truth. The only way we can navigate through these challenging times is to listen to each other and teach those who haven’t learned listening skills to learn them quickly. Trust that the other person isn’t “less than,” assume instead they’re getting different information than you are. “Beliefs are like lenses. They do not just show us reality, they shape it. What we call common sense is often just culture repeating itself through us.”
- There’s been a lot of chatter about women stepping back from leadership roles. Chief and The Harris Poll call BS on that with the results of their new poll. Women aren’t stepping back from leadership — they’re redesigning it on their own terms. In fact, 86% of senior women leaders say they’re more ambitious now than they were five years ago. An incredible 92% percent are energized by the professional growth still ahead, and 61% of senior women leaders believe they’re at their peak power now or will be in the next five years. “Women aren’t ‘quiet quitting’ on ambition. Instead, they’re rejecting the rules that never served them, and rewriting the playbook that wasn’t written for them.” I cannot applaud this loud enough, my hands hurt from clapping!!!
- There is a criminal enterprise run by monkeys. Bad monkeys!
- Sixty-three million Americans (close to 25%) are providing care to an adult with health or functional needs, or to a child with a serious medical condition or disability according to a new report from AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving. That’s 10 million more than were doing so in 2020! Do you have colleagues in your workplace in this group, and have you investigated ways to ease their burden?
Kindness is Contagious, Pass It Along!
I had an amazing day last week. All in one day, someone told me how much she enjoys this newsletter; a long-time business friend told me she thinks I’m a wonderful writer; and another long-time friend proactively emailed me telling me that advice I shared years ago still benefits her to this day and, in fact, she has been sharing it with others.
I was walking on air all weekend just thinking about these kindnesses. And then I channeled it forward by thanking someone who had helped me tremendously a few years ago, letting them know what they did for me is still paying dividends.
Whose day can you brighten with an expression of thanks? Go ahead, it will be the best 10 minutes you invest today. 😊
