Heroes Without Capes: Bernice Sandler
Today we know her as “The Godmother Title IX.” But in the early 1960’s, Bernice Sandler was a highly qualified woman with multiple degrees who could not land a job. Employers kept pigeon-holing her as “a housewife who went back to school.” When she asked for feedback to get around that, she was told that she came on too strong “for a woman.”
Instead of diminishing herself, Bernice began researching the laws around sex-based discrimination and found a spearhead for driving changes in them. She fought for years and, in 1972, was instrumental in getting Title IX passed into law.
“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
Thank you, Bernice, for your persistence to create changes that made it possible for women to be treated more equitably in the workplace.
Let’s celebrate one of the true heroes who made it possible for so many of us to succeed in business.
