I’m listening to Atlas by Brené Brown (thanks Natalie Lorenzo for the recommendation).
In one study, people thought there were only 3 emotions for humans to experience: happiness, sadness, and anger…. But according to Brown and other researchers, it’s more like 15. In Atlas, she identifies and provides examples of each, talks about “near enemy” words like sympathy and empathy that are not interchangeable and helps readers learn to name which emotions they are feeling at various times. A key takeaway from the book is that by carefully identifying what we’re feeling as we’re feeling it, we can work through difficult emotions in healthier ways.
It’s an easy listen/read and one I highly recommend to those who want to further optimize the human experience.
…and I’ve got social entertaining on the brain as I orchestrate two milestone birthday parties for my husband over the next two weeks, so I’ve got some shares on that front for you, along with a few light-hearted takes to lighten our collective moods. Enjoy!
This Week’s Shares: Compares, Compassion and Social Fun
- Looking to start a book club? Here are some tips for streamlining the process and having a successful group.
- Want tips for hosting a wonderful dinner party? Here you go.
- Looking for a great hotel bar? I gotcha, via Food & Wine.
- I talk a lot about being compassionate toward others, but it’s just as important to be compassionate to yourself. Do you have negative self-talk, or are you kind to yourself when you make mistakes? If you’re curious about how you rate on the self-compassion scale, you can take this free assessment that Brené Brown recommends in Atlas.
- Speaking of compassion, Trader Joe’s has it all over Kroeger when it comes to taking care of employees and reaping the benefits of treating them well.
- Oh, why not? Here’s one comparing Costco and Sam’s Club in terms of employee care and profits.
- With so many people looking for work, how important are resumes? Steve Russolillo, writing for Business Insider says they’re all but passé. If you cannot see the whole article, the net/net is: resumes are increasingly ignored by hiring managers for several reasons, including they are too busy to wade through them and they look “too polished” (not genuine) when generated by AI. And job seekers are increasingly relying on LinkedIn and networking. The gem in the article is the rise of job tryouts, where companies have candidates work for a specified period before offering them a permanent role. These are called “try outs.”
- Hey just for fun, check out this map of which states are other states’ favorites. E.g., California likes Hawaii best. Spoiler: nobody likes NJ! (Don’t worry, NJ, I’ll always love you!)
Do Good Spotlight: Foster Love
Transforming the lives of foster youth is their mission. Foster Love started with one event to help one child and eventually grew into an initiative helping millions of children. From business events to donations, find ways you can help their cause: Foster Love.
⏳Until Next Time…
This seemed to resonate with a lot of you last week, so here’s a repeat: be compassionate with yourself. Life’s an evolution, not a revolution.
Happy weekend!
