Hi,

First, I’d like to thank the people taking the time to complement this weekly refueling station for people leading teams with strength and compassion.

We collectively strive daily against a multitude of forces to find answers for revamping so many aspects of our world. Much is needed to facilitate the changes required to thrive as a species without trashing the place.

I salute each of you who not only evidence your best self every day, but check in with your team members to see what they need to be able to bring their best selves forward too.

This is me saluting you: ❤

This week I’ve got a mashup of content to share, so let’s go!

  • When was the last time you visited a museum? From Surmountable, view data and perspectives on who visits museums and the challenges museums are facing post pandemic.
  • One of my simple pleasures is “Real Simple” magazine, and this month I found 15 ways to reset yourself this fall. Here’s one: investigators from Brigham and Women’s Hospital found that women who suppress their emotions had a less diverse gut microbiome, which has been linked to chronic conditions—think obesity and type 2 diabetes. Dr. Rachel Goldman, PhD suggests checking in with yourself to question how you’re feeling and to take the time to answer honestly. Notes from me: not just for women, and do it aloud. Hearing your voice saying something makes it more “real.”
  • I wrote about the growing recognition that it’s unfair to expect Gen Z team members to “just know” how to work in physical team environments when they haven’t had the same exposure to them as others. This from Chief not only spotlights the issues Gen Z and their teammates are having around etiquette and culture but provides tips for spotting issues and addressing them together.
  • You know I just love how Luke Harlan has a way of hitting the nail on the head? Well, he does it again here where he talks about resilience and how to stop expecting life to get easier. Trust me, this one was well timed for me and an excellent reminder.
  • Want to avoid an argument? When things start to bubble, ask the other person if this is something you need to agree on. Magic! Two more tips in the same vein from Jefferson Fisher.
  • I’m raising this one up because I’ve noticed myself, my (adult) kids shared the same POV from a recent Uber driver, and Ossiana Tepfenhart writing for Medium takes it a bit further. It’s about the increasing issue we’re having communicating, you know, IRL. Not just verbally—I’m noticing acknowledgement between humans is down (think, walking your dog in a park and instead of nodding a greeting, the person coming your way diverts their eyes). Why are we suddenly, or at least increasingly, engaging less?

“The Most Amazing Marketing Book Ever”

I recently had a multi-enlightening experience, and of course I want to share. A friend of mine is a contributor to a book called, “The Most Amazing Marketing Book Ever” and he asked me to read it. He was kind enough to give me a signed copy (with a personal note that made me smile). Being in marketing for almost my entire career, I will admit I embarked on the reading to honor my word to him, but I wasn’t expecting what came next. Short answer: the title undersells it.

Each chapter is written by a different marketing expert. Three pages into the first chapter, I found myself grabbing a highlighter and a pen so that I could take notes in the margins. I couldn’t put it down. I read 6 more chapters that same day. Then, I ordered another copy for DBE’s marketing manager. And then I bought another copy for our head of strategy.

So what I gained from this book, besides the new ideas the content sparked, is a reminder that there are brilliant minds expressing themselves every day on all kinds of topics, and even when we think we know something, it’s worth it to consider there might be platinum in the nuances revealed by a little exploration.

Q: Is there something you are avoiding doing because you think you won’t gain anything? Maybe that’s the very thing that has something to teach you. Just sayin’.

  • A longer and less stressful life if you can pass any 1 of these 8 tests? Oh, you owe it to yourself to check ‘em out, via Inc. And BTW, I am actively working on making #7 a BIG priority. Game changer.
  • Are luggage-free trips in your future? (I like and don’t like this idea….) Read this one and let me know what you think.

Heading off for fun in the sand and surf. Last one for the season, at least in NJ. Have a great rest of the week and let’s wrap up August in style!
