Following last week’s Niki’s Notes, I’ve been paying more attention to my sources and cross-checking key issues I’m following. It would be impossible to do this for every piece of information that comes my way, but I’m committed to better understanding various POVs on the issues I care about deeply. I’ll share what I learn in case it helps you—please share your tips with me.
As each of us gets better, we all get better.
And on that note, here are this week’s shares for activating your best self:
Curated Shares
- How do you get to “truth?” One way is to begin with a desire to understand rather than be right. And from there, ask better questions to keep educating yourself. Am I oversimplifying? Sure. Is it worth trying? Absolutely.
- “A Stanford study found that U.S. employment for early-career employees in the most AI-exposed fields, such as software development and customer service, has fallen substantially in recent years. Research at the World Economic Forum suggests that 50% to 60% of typical junior tasks (report drafting, research synthesis, coding fixes, scheduling, data cleaning) can already be executed by AI.”
Amy C. Edmondson and Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic propose companies resist the temptation to replace people with AI; instead, they suggest companies redesign jobs to better leverage AI and people. Gift link to the full article in the Harvard Business Review.
- Sludge alert! Do you sometimes feel you’re getting the run around from customer support? It may be intentional…
- What’s the state of RTO? “A new report from D.C.-based analytics and advisory firm Gallup shows that the hybrid work trend, which became a pillar of the U.S. workplace during the Covid pandemic, has stabilized since the end of 2022. About half of all workplaces Gallup surveyed retain some form of hybrid working model, with a mix of requirements for workers to be in the office or work remotely.” Lots more data, trends, and “nuances,” in this Inc. article.
- This story in The Atlantic is from 2022 but I’m sharing because the challenge of adult child/parent relationships is something my friends of all ages share with me. For example: “Both sides often fail to recognize how profoundly the rules of family life have changed over the past half century. According to the historian Stephanie Coontz, the director of education and research for the Council on Contemporary Families, “‘Never before have family relationships been seen as so interwoven with the search for personal growth, the pursuit of happiness, and the need to confront and overcome psychological obstacles. For most of history, family relationships were based on mutual obligations rather than on mutual understanding.’”
Putting it another way: the rules have changed: there are no rules. Millions are struggling to relate to family members when centuries of hierarchy-structured assumptions no longer apply.
- Okay! Love this! How do you innovate? You iterate, says Jesse Cole.
