Hi,
Were you on the giving or receiving end of pranks on Monday? The NY Times showed its sense of humor by replacing words with pictures for the Connections game, which I discovered over morning coffee. I did a double take, then realized it was a joke. Other than that, it was pretty tame this year. How about you?
Here are the shares to help you consider compassion-forward concepts as you increase your company’s productivity and profitability:
Stories to Help You Lead
- Bayer is trying something new: workgroups run without hierarchy. This link goes to the Instagram summary. If you want more, the full story is in The Wall Street Journal.
- I cannot get this podcast off my mind! The interviewer is Tami Simon, who is a true pioneer in the mindful space. And the person whose story I cannot get off my mind is Anita Moorjani. The first 10 minutes or so are background for the bigger story she shares. My key takeaway is how we’re on the right path when we reframe sensitivity to others—in life and the workplace—as a strength instead of a weakness. And how exciting that as a reader of this weekly newsletter, you have more than a front-row seat. You’re part of the change! Let’s keep the momentum going together, shall we? Thank you to compassionate workplace expert, Linda Cohen, for sharing.
- Do you have someone on your team who gets defensive? This Instagram post from Jefferson Fisher gives great tips on how to disagree with someone without getting them defensive. Check out this and other Instagram posts from Jefferson Fisher. They may be helpful both of you, and to whomever is coaching them
- Grace Judson makes some good points in this short POV about factoring generation and gender when interacting with co-workers.
- CEOs are under increasing pressure, and a new report by Chief and Wakefield Research has details along with steps you can take if you find the clock ticking on your watch.
- Three writers for Harvard Business Review reviewed 69 articles—published between March 2020 and July 2023 in top journals in management and applied psychology—to better understand how the Covid crisis impacted management. Their summary is fascinating and great food for reflection.
- Hot topic: Did you know the average retirement age in the US is 62, not 65 or older? And yet, increasing numbers of Americans are working beyond age 62 for all kinds of reasons. And from the compassion perspective, we’ve got battles with ageism. This story was in the news so I’m sharing.

On a Personal Note
- Tipping Reasonable to Tipping Run Amuck? I’m on team run amuck. I’m happy to tip for great service wherever/whenever I encounter it, and gladly tip my restaurant servers, in-salon hair stylists, and others where tipping has been the norm. But I don’t habitually tip, or feel guilty for not tipping, when receiving standard service in other situations (e.g., I don’t usually tip at a fast food drive up). Want some validation or new perspective, check out this on tip-eggedon.
