Nah, it’s not selfish. If you don’t prioritize yourself, who will?
But it’s hard to know how to balance helping those who depend on you and taking a pause to put on the “emergency oxygen mask first” so you have the strength and stamina you need for everyone else.
For me, a helpful approach is to think about “future Niki.” What could I do in real time to keep myself optimized for what’s needed “today” without sacrificing too much, leaving “future Niki” drained and of little use to anyone, including me.
And while I give myself high marks for balancing time between my children, husband, work priorities, and other family and friends, I didn’t do as well in taking care of my physical self, for which I am now in “catch up” mode.
If you could see clearly into the future, what version of yourself would you manifest, and what can you do today to get yourself there?

- Would it be helpful to know what people in their 80’s would do differently if they could go back in time? It’s not the same old, same old, so if you’re curious, here’s a gift link to a piece by Thomas Oppong on Medium.
- Mona Lazar says there’s something different about people these days. It nets out to too many of us being oblivious to others. Since I write about raising self-awareness, I thought this would be a good share. Her perspectives made me wonder how to bring us forward to better interpersonal interactions, the kind that buoy us and make us stronger for ourselves and each other.
- What’s a soft day off and is it ethical? If you’re salaried and give your company overtime without pay on a regular basis, e.g., you’re a team player when it’s needed, I say the company should reciprocate. What do you think?
- Speaking of which, my new guilty pleasure is George Stern Leadership on Instagram. His followers send him texts from their crazy bosses and he weighs in with his POV and advice. I get a kick out of his reactions and appreciate his perspectives.
- The always-brilliant Nancy Duarte has advice for leaders when communicating about change.
- Are you an introvert, extrovert, ambivert—or an otrovert? Coined by New York City psychiatrist Dr. Rami Kaminski, “otrovert” is a newer classification describing, “individuals who are ultra-independent social observers who exhibit empathy and enjoy deep individual connections but lack the ability or interest in belonging to social groups.”
- If you know me you know pizza is my all-time-favorite food. So of course, I must share that MY favorite NJ pizza place—Razza in Jersey City—was just voted the #3 pizza restaurant in the country and the #1 spot in NJ. Oh, and I’ll be there with my family in a few weeks having a blast.
Do Good Spotlight: Insulin for Life USA
I take Zepbound and the distributor keeps sending me needles despite me telling them I don’t need them (I purchased thinner needles on my own). What the heck am I supposed to do with all those unopened needles?
Enter Insulin for Life USA. They collect in-date, unopened supplies from individuals, corporations, and organizations and redistribute them to children and adults in need, free of charge. They work exclusively through licensed healthcare providers in the USA and worldwide.
⏳Until Next Time…
Don’t procrastinate about your self-care. Prioritize it alongside your other priorities for a better future. Every little bit helps!
