Hi,
I’ve been pretty calm about the rapid movement of this year, but OMG, it’s the end of October and 2023 is peaking over the horizon! Are you ready?
Here are the stories I wanted to share with you as we round the corner and head into home base for 2022:
- This is the kind of story that makes me believe we’ll get better as we go forward.
- Excellent advice in Chief post about the balancing act women business leaders often feel they need to do when giving feedback and what to do if you catch yourself struggling about the anticipated reaction of the recipient. If this isn’t a challenge for you, is there someone on your leadership team who could use some help with this? Feel free to share…
- We’re becoming more myopic. Literally. What’s going on? It’s in this article from The Atlantic.

- Are you familiar with the work of Mark Robert Waldman? I wasn’t but am starting to be a fan now. He’s a neuroscience researcher whose work helps people learn to understand each other by listening better. In the November issue of Real Simple, there’s an article where he demonstrates how little we retain from what others are saying and how to develop skills for retaining more. He had me yawning on purpose. You can learn more about his work and techniques with this video interview and at his website. And if you subscribe to Real Simple, you can see the November print issue.
- More on gender in the workplace: male defaults. This from Harvard Business Review, “But are masculine defaults actually necessary for an effective workplace? The evidence is now robust: Success at work requires both stereotypically masculine and feminine characteristics. As we explore below, many organizations improved — rose in rankings, obtained more venture capital, and identified the full potential of their candidates — after they reduced their masculine defaults and revamped their workplace practices to include more feminine defaults.” Interested? Here’s the rest of the article.
Okay, that’s it for this week. Please continue to suggest not for profits to feature in our Do Good section, and if you have a suggestion for a company to feature in the Noteworthy section—including your own—shout it out.
